January 1 is a day for fresh beginnings: making plans and resolutions. On December 31, New York City famously counts down to the midnight hour in Times Square, where thousands gather to watch a faceted crystal ball drop at the appointed hour. Elsewhere, millions of Americans mark the end of the year and herald the New Year with balls, concerts and private parties.
