Museums in the United States rely on government sources, the private sector and earned income. The majority of U.S. museums are nonprofits, a status that exempts them from paying taxes. But that status also means that museums must attract sustainable sources of revenue, while being as much at the whim of the marketplace as for-profit enterprises.
