Department of Commerce in Washington

Protecting intellectual property rights is in everyone’s best interest.

Today, innovation is booming in many parts of the world. But theft of ideas can slow it. After months or years of raising capital and working to turn an idea into a product and then bringing it to the marketplace, theft of intellectual property — design, symbols, names, images and innovation itself — denies income to innovators. If pervasive, it even can stop people from developing new products or solutions in the first place.

U.S. laws protect innovators and creative ideas. Everyone benefits, from consumers to artists and businesses.

The U.S. Department of Commerce, depicted in this downloadable poster, includes the International Trade Administration and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. These bureaus of the Commerce Department work to protect intellectual property rights of American innovators which in turn provide investment and creativeness in an innovation economy.
