Americans celebrate workers’ social and economic contributions to  strength, prosperity and well-being. First celebrated in New York State in 1887, Labor Day exalts the collective achievements of American workers. On the first Monday in September, when the holiday is celebrated, schools and offices are closed, giving most U.S. workers a three-day break.
