U.S. Supreme Court: Guardian of the Constitution

U.S. Supreme Court: Guardian of the Constitution

The Supreme Court is the ultimate arbiter of constitutionality. Each year, litigants in hundreds of cases petition the Supreme Court seeking agreement by the court to hear an appeal from a lower court’s decision. The justices hear oral arguments in selected cases, discuss and draft opinions, issue rulings and consider petitions asking for review of decisions made by lower courts.
