On Veterans Day Americans honor all who have served in the U.S. military. On November 11, local parades, ceremonies and other tributes to military veterans take place across the country. At Arlington National Cemetery, outside Washington, the president lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns, a monument dedicated to U.S. service members who have died without their remains being identified. A combined color guard representing all branches of the U.S. military presents arms at the tomb and a bugler plays “Taps,” a haunting melody used at U.S. military funerals.
